ABOUT ALEX

Alex Church (He/Him) is surrealist explorer of contemporary Americana. Based in Minneapolis, Alex has worked around the US as a director, dramaturg, performer, and playwright.

Born and raised on the Minnesota-North Dakota border, he has always been drawn to the electric space between truths. Alex’s work wrestles with current circumstances, abstracting the socio-political issues of our time to make them tangible and accessible. He takes audiences to dangerous places, asking them to see themselves within and around the omniscient forces that shape our world.

As a director, he’s drawn to work that highlights the ramifications of how we got where we are. Shows that pull the consequences of the past into the light of today, asking us to reckon with history in order to shape our future. He loves plays that are existential, rhythmic, and alive.

As a playwright, Alex interrogates why we are the way we are. He writes to make meaning of the complex and messy. He combines lived experience with a research-based practice to create sculptural, multi-dimensional pieces of theater. His plays personify the best and worst of humanity and set them onstage for audiences to examine from all sides.

With honesty and hope, Alex’s work is both mirror and microscope. He uses convergent realities and dissonant moralities to invite audiences into the gray and unknown.

He makes theater through his company Third Space Theater, dedicated to challenging artists and audiences with new ideas and aesthetics while connecting people to quality local resources working to improve their communities. Past productions have led to thousands of dollars in donations to local organizations such as Tubman, Freshwater, the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, and Wayside Recovery.

Inspirations include Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Caryl Churchill, Astrid, Harlow, and Hayes. When not in rehearsal or tip tapping away at his laptop, Alex enjoys playing piano, a nice jog, walking in nature, podcasts, spearmint gum, and a large cold brew.
