ABOUT ALEX

Alex Church (He/Him) is a writer, director, dramaturg, producer, performer, teaching artist, and occasional comedian passionate about connecting art and impact. He's worked on all sides of the stage with the Guthrie, the Playwrights' Center, Children's Theatre Company, Full Circle Theater, Six Points Theater, Frank Theater, Theater in the Round, the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Minneapolis Musical Theater, Hypnic Jerk Theater, Act Up Theatre, Jackdonkey Productions, Lakeshore Players, Eden Prairie Players, and An Alleged Theater Company.

His work dissects complicated socio-political issues and makes them accessible, excavating the best and worst of humanity so audiences can see themselves from all sides. Alex's theater is razor sharp, hilarious, and seduces with a poetic brutality that takes audiences to dangerous places.

He makes theater through his producing company, 3rd Space Theater, dedicated to using the arts as an activist practice. The company creates pieces that serve as a third space away from the home and work to connect communities, encourage conversation, and provide opportunities for engagement and action. Past productions have direct the attentions of hundreds of audience members towards quality local resources and raised over $1500 for organizations such as Women Winning, the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center, and Wayside Recovery.

Alex's plays include The Elephant, a two-act rock musical exploring the collateral damage of addiction; Abscission, a drama interrogating rape culture through the lens of a problematic marriage; Eudaimonia, an absurdist comedy about suicidal ideation and the little fractures within us all; and Dutch: Made in America, a kaleidoscopic interrogation of the early life and legacy of Ronald Reagan.

Alex has received over $15,000 in grant funding from MRAC, LRAC, the University of Minnesota, the Eden Prairie Community Foundation, and MN Fringe. He holds a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Theater, Political Science, and Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. He was born and raised in Moorhead, MN and currently lives in Minneapolis. When not writing a play or in a rehearsal, Alex loves cooking, listening to podcasts, and tending to his dozens of houseplants.
